Are You Down with Down?
Q: What is the best filling for a sofa?
A: Well, this all depends on your preference for the feel and look of your furniture.
There are three primary options for cushion cores: down (typically a combination of feathers and down), foam, or a combination of down and foam.
The question then arises, do you prefer sitting in or on your sofa?
If you enjoy sinking into your couch, then down may be the ideal choice for you.
Down has a more ‘relaxed or casual’ look and a very soft and super comfy feel.
It also requires a lot of plumping and fluffing the cushions to maintain a neater look.
If you have allergies, down might be something to avoid. And definitely if you are vegan.
Maybe you prefer a more crisp, tailored look for a sofa with minimal care (and a firmer feel) in which case we'd recommend foam with a wrap.
However, some people want to have the best of both worlds—a defined shape from foam coupled with the softness of feather.
This would be a combo of down and foam. Occasional plumping is required to maintain comfort, but less than feather only and fibre cushions. Foam & Down combos are not vegan because of the feathers.
When it comes to down versus foam cushions, it ultimately depends on your personal preferences and needs.
Regardless of the construction of your cushion, if you choose an all-down option, it is important to regularly fluff your cushions. This helps redistribute the feathers evenly throughout the cushion and restore the volume or space between the down and feathers.
