Chandeliers Look ‘Lit’, But Do They ‘Light’ A Room?

Q: Does decorative lighting, like a chandelier, provide enough light in a room?

A: In short - No, almost all decorative lighting is ‘pretty’. And while it adds beauty, cohesion, sparkle and joy to a space, I wouldn’t rely on their light to illuminate an entire room.

All domestic interior lighting can be put into 4 general types: ambient, task, accent and decorative. If these 4 types of lighting are carefully combined when planning each room, you can create the perfect atmosphere for every space in your house.

Each room has different overall functions and those need to be considered when choosing lighting.

  • Ambient - the overall light in a room; evenly illuminates the room without highlighting specific areas & can include natural light. It sets the mood within the room & usually (centrally) focused on the ceiling.

  • Task - lighting for specific activities like cooking & reading. Brighter than ambient and usually from desk or table lamps.

  • Accent - lighting to accent features or objects within the room like architectural details, plants or artwork.

  • Decorative - used for aesthetic purposes like wall sconces, pendants and chandeliers.

No matter what type of lighting you choose, make sure to use energy-efficient bulbs to help reduce your carbon footprint. LED bulbs are a great option as they last longer and use less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Summary:

Chandeliers and other decorative lighting don’t give off much needed ‘LIGHT’, but they are really cool and ‘LIT’ from a design perspective.
