Is Under-Cabinet Lighting A Bright Idea?
Q: I’m currently doing a remodel, is under-cabinet lighting worth it?
A: Well, it’s not necessary in a remodel. But it is a nice (affordable) luxury depending on the type you choose. And can really add beautiful task & accent lighting to your kitchen.
The most common 5 options are below (low end to high end):
‘old school’ plug-in fluorescent lamp strips
battery operated hockey pucks
plug-in LED tape & strips
hardwired LED bars
hardwired lighted power strips
What are the biggest reasons to use Under-Cabinet Lighting?
Add a high-end appeal to your home or business
Brighten countertops and work areas with crisp lighting
Create pleasant, inviting spaces with warm lighting
Get rid of shadows in neglected, dimly-lit rooms
Personalize lighting design to match your style and decor
Under-cabinet lighting increases the quality of light in your kitchen by providing ‘task-lighting’ specifically where you're working—on the countertop. If you're working with overhead lighting alone, you'll likely have a lot of shadows.
What are the 5 main types of Under-Cabinet Lighting?
Fluorescent lights—Simply put, technology and design have come a long way. The look is bulky, it produces lots of heat, the type of light emitting is not ideal, it produces sound, its inefficient in cost, and it’s bad for the environment. We don’t recommend these!
Hockey Puck lights—can be found in battery-powered models that simply stick to the underside of cabinets making them a great option for people who are renting or don’t want to deal with wiring lights. It Can come in easy-to-install, battery-powered options (LED only), generally very affordable but emits circles of light (light cones) instead of more even lighting.
LED Tape & Strips lights—a sleek and even lighting solution for those who prefer not to have visible fixtures under their cabinets. These lights are ideal for accent lighting.
The benefits of LED tape & strip lights include seamless end-to-end mounting for even illumination without dark spots, near-invisibility when installed, waterproof options, easy peel-and-stick installation, affordability, and a long lifespan.
LED Lighted Power-Strips—doubles as task lighting & outlets. If you want completely clean backsplashes with no visible outlets but with lots of power receptacles, this option is for you.
SUMMARY:
Plug-in light bars, puck lights, and LED strip lights are generally easier to install, as they do not require hardwiring. However, if you prefer a more seamless appearance or are undertaking a larger renovation project, you may want to consider hardwired under cabinet lights.
So if you like to add some extra lighting, upscale your space, and add value to your home, under cabinet lighting is a very easy expense to add to your kitchen!
